First record M. M. Ikhilov's ethnography "Narodnosti lezginskoi gruppy" (Makhachkala, 1967) describes khinkal among the Lezgin-group peoples as an "old national" dish of thin dough cut in squares or rhombs and boiled in broth (D; the Lezgin form хинкӀар is not spelled there).

Written of the Lezgin-group peoples as a whole (Lezgins, Tabasarans, Rutuls, Tsakhurs, Aguls). древним" is an opinion, not a dated attestation.
