How sure we are
Fairly sure. A dated text records it by 1889. Part of its origin story is legend.
We list 3 sources: 1 primary or archaeological, 2 secondary. How grading works.
First record Smirnov, Cheremisy, 1889, p. 82: pelmeni "(izi kogol)" among Mari hot dishes (D); first found, the same root but not the word podkogylyo, no filling described
Черемисы: историко-этнографическій очеркъ (Kazan, 1889), p. 82
Name is Finno-Ugric: Mari под, пад "котёл" + когыльо, кагыль "пирожок, пирог" (cf. Estonian kukkel). Footnoted to Kazantsev 1967, p. 234. Kazantsev's text itself was not opened.
Found by research in October 2026; awaiting editorial review.
"Pod" = cauldron, "kagyl" = pie, so "boiled pirozhki".
History sources are from the atlas and not yet independently checked.
